Doctor Foster

Doctor Foster went to Gloucester,
In a shower of rain,
He stepped in a puddle,
Right up to his middle,
And never went there again.
 

This rhyme was first published in 1844

It is thought to refer to a visit made by Edward I to Gloucester. On the day in question King Edward's horse stumbled and he fell into a muddy puddle. He vowed that he would never visit Gloucester again.
